The Definition of "Company"
"Companionship, fellowship, society, camaraderie, comradeship"
"A group of persons associated in joint effort for a common purpose"
Being apart of the Starz Performing Company (SPC) is a privilege and an opportunity for our most technically advanced dancers to learn at an accelerated pace while continually working hard to improve their skills and technique. It provides more performance and competition opportunities which enhances the overall purpose of being part of the Company.
Starz Performing Company is a serious commitment on the dancers' part as well as the parents' part. It is a commitment not only to the dancers themselves, but the parents and peers whom they will work with. It requires dedication and commitment to classes and teachers. It is a group effort and will be successful only if all involved work together as a team.
Company is a continuous growing experience in which all dancers must be constantly striving for improvement and excellence. It is not a point at which the dancer finally reaches a goal and assumes that he/she no longer has to invest time and effort in order to keep that goal.
Students may have to sacrifice other popular activities that may conflict with rehearsals or the competitions schedule and performances. Any function or activity that is termed "required” or "mandatory” is just that! You must participate in these activities to remain on the team. Parents need to be aware that participation in this program can be time consuming before and during the competition season. We need the full support of families who are involved in this program. Extra-curricular activities, family vacations and appointments should be scheduled around SPC classes, rehearsals, competition dates, and performances. Please consider the above carefully prior to making your commitment to the competition team! Failure to comply with the established criteria will result in dismissal from the competition program.
The Audition & Placement Process
All Company members and potential members are required to attend the Live 2 Dance 4-day Summer Intensive Workshop held each year in August. New students can come in for individual placement by appointment only.
Please allow the instructors to make all decisions regarding level and class placement. Each dancer is carefully placed in a class that the instructor feels is the best for that dancer's age and abilities. We cannot accommodate dancers for reasons such as friends, carpools, etc. Remember that each dancer progresses at their own pace and some groups that start classes together will often not be in the same class after a year or two.
Every dancer is responsible for his or her own behavior. Class time is very valuable and must be used to concentrate on the learning of dance. Dancers are expected to maintain open and positive attitudes with a willingness to work hard and learn quickly. A student displaying disruptive behavior or showing a continued lack of concentration and willingness to exert their best effort will be dismissed from the program.
Performance Policies & Eligibility
Starz Performing Company Dancers – all dancers are expected to perform at ALL local dance performances, but no dancer is guaranteed to perform.
Starz Apprentice Company Dancers – dancers will only be guaranteed to perform in the Spring Recital. Dancers will only perform or compete with teacher recommendation.
If any Dancer wishes to perform or compete any L2D choreographed piece they must have permission by the choreographer and the event must be age appropriate. They must also fill out the "Application to Attend non-L2D Events” form found in the office.
To help your dancer prevent injuries, parent/dancers please know your mind and body limitations. Please don't over commit your child. Teachers' expect dancers to be well-rested, eating proper meals and a healthy strengthening program. Dancers should know how to balance their School Academics with their STARZ dance schedule. SR and Teen SPC dancers have the most demands on their bodies, L2D feels your dance company team relies on you not to over-schedule or over-commit yourself in other areas. INJURED DANCERS: Any dancers with repeated or prolonged injuries that will affect any partnering sections and/or make staging of choreography unbalanced will be repositioned in the dance. All partnering sections will have an alternate; if partner becomes injured, alternate will replace that segment for the remainder of the dance season.
Requirements for Competitions
Taking the healthy approach to dance competitions…
Competition is healthy; but as dance agent Tony Selznick says, "It's healthy only if your self-esteem is not connected to your score, AND if you're dancing for the right reasons”. In order to become a better artist, your must always strive to look at the big picture. So, what's the big picture? Part of the big picture is to remember that dance is an art form, not a football game. There are no winners and losers like in a sport or a game. If you think competitions are about awards and medals, then you're not dancing for the right reasons.
Competition requires special teachers, special students, and special parents. It requires time, talent, dedication, and regard for each other as team members. Our combined positive attitudes guarantee success. Winning is everything only when you define it as doing your best! Students should have good sportsmanship and competition attitudes towards one another. This means concentrating on improving their OWN capabilities and growing as dancers. As we practice, travel to competitions, meet new friends and grow together let us remember to show respect for ourselves and for others by always being supportive of our fellow dancers, parents and teachers. Teams whose members support one another always stand out as leaders. We all want to bring out the best in our student's (child's) talents. In turn, we build their self-image and develop perseverance skills. Having the feeling of achievement gives students the confidence to attack other challenges in the future. This feeling of accomplishment alone is worth more than any trophy or medal! We need to measure our achievements according to ourselves and not others. Live 2 Dance is dedicated to making the Starz Performing Company a positive experience for all.
Required Competitions for Company Members
($5.00 processing fee added to each competition per dancer)
Competitions will be listed in the Upcoming Events Section
National Competitions
Starz Performing Company dancers are not required to attend nationals but it is highly suggested and recommended! L2d will not be attending nationals as a group until the 2012 dance season. Solos and duos/trios have the opportunity to attend. But NO groups will be attending.
Competition Costs, Fees & Due Dates
Spotlight Entry Fees TBA. You can always check the website at www.spotlightevents.com. There will be a $5 processing fee due per entered dancer in addition to the entry fees.
Due Dates will be listed with the Competition selection on the Upcoming Events page.
Competition costs include but are not limited to; all regional and/or national fees, L2D processing fees, transportation, meals, lodging, costumes, shoes, and accessories. Fundraisers may be held to help defer the costs of competitions expenses for both dancers.
Extra Rehearsal Fees
Competition dances require more preparation. Live 2 Dance will allow up to 2 hours of extra rehearsals without charge. If the teacher feels more rehearsals are necessary, a fee of $50 per hour will be charged; fees will be divided amongst the amount of students.
Attendance Policy
All teachers must be informed in writing of all absentees. Excused absences are as follows: illness (except the common cold), mandatory graded-school events, and family emergencies with teacher approval. Come and watch unless you are contagious!
There are exceptions to the following rules and they are under the teachers' discretion, please come in and discuss your circumstance. Regular Attendance is required in order to progress. Studio doors close ten (10) minutes after the start of the class. Once the door is closed you must have the teachers' approval to enter. If you are not in class, you will have to make up that class within one month. Dancers that miss more than three (3) classes in a row, or those that have inconsistent attendance may be moved to a lower level. Also, dancers who miss two consecutive absences from rehearsals during February thru May (competition season) and without the pre-approval from teacher, dancer will be subject to dismissal from competitions. Students are not allowed to miss rehearsal the week of a performance or competition or they will be eliminated from that number for the remainder of the competition season.
If incidents do arise, the teachers will fill out an incident report stating their side of what happened during class. If the situation arises in the following class the teacher will fill out another report. Then students will have to meet with either the teacher or Angela Hartley within two (2) days to discuss ways in which to fix the incident. Meetings may be scheduled during the day, before the 4pm class, or after the last class of the evening. Arrangements will need to be made in order to attend the meeting. Incidents reports are only viewed by L2D staff unless it's an injury report.
Any student who repeatedly comes to class not prepared may be asked to leave. Additionally, any dancer whose hair does not remain secure may be asked to sit out for the remainder of that lesson. If a dancer is asked to sit out, they will take thorough notes; they will not leave the classroom but will instead view the remainder of the lesson quietly from the side. Dancers who sit out for this reason will be required to makeup that class. In order to keep the dancers training and learning at the highest level, we respectfully ask for your compliance.
Competing Solely for L2D
- Students competing for Live 2 Dance must compete solely for our organization. As you can imagine competing for more than one studio can be a conflict of interest and cause some extreme scheduling problems.
- Dancers who are registered as an L2D student must enter all competition pieces under L2D.
- All outside choreographers must reside outside a 350-mile radius. Only outside choreographed pieces may use the studio as a rehearsal facility for $10 per hour. An additional fee of $10 per hour will be charged for a teacher having to come during rehearsals.
BA Star Make-Up & Accessories
In order to ensure consistency in appearance on stage, special competition make-up is required for the SPC dancers. Other accessories that may be required are a rhinestone necklace, rhinestone earrings, rhinestone hairpiece, and rhinestone eye lashes. All BA make-up and accessories are to be ordered by December. To help out with costs, check to see if you can purchase items from prior Company dancers or those who have out grown their jewelry. No spray on glitter!
Costume embellishments (i.e. rhinestones, sequins, etc) may cost up to $20 and will be added into the cost of the costumes. If cost exceeds $20 it will be the teachers' responsibility to contact the parents. Teachers will communicate with each other on the costume embellishments.
Warm-Ups & Studio Jackets
The following items are for sale for all Live 2 Dance Dancers, not just Company Dancers. All items will have the L2D logo on them
Official Studio Jacket · Black Shorts · Nude Undergarments
All items are to be purchased through L2D
***One month prior to any competitions all companies must wear ALL BLACK to every class with the exception that ballet still has to wear pink tights.***
Parent Support "Positive Attitudes Create A Positive Atmosphere"
Parental support is very much appreciated by all the teachers; however, it is very important that parents and students respect all teachers' decisions regarding costumes, choreography, etc. Live 2 Dance staff will handle all communication between competition personnel, costume companies, etc. and our studio. Your attitude is reflected on your student. Please maintain a positive attitude both in and out of the studio.
Any individual caught talking negatively about any student, parent, or staff member will be asked to leave. And if it's a reoccurrence, they will not be allowed to return. An incident report will be written for dancers talking negatively. If it's a repeated offense they may be removed from company. The studio closes at 8:45pm (or 15 min after last class) please take any prolonged discussions to the parking lot so the L2D staff members can go home to their families!
Occasionally parents are asked to assist the instructor with something outside of class. Please do not assume that this gives the child "special allowances”. Also, a child's placement in our competition program is based on ability, attitude, positive dedication, and prior attendance.
Parents are responsible for their student at all times prior to and after their performance on stage. Instructors are working with other students and cannot be responsible for attending to students who are not dancing. Parents are not permitted backstage at competitions, unless requested by the instructor. Parents are also to be positive to their dancer as well as other dancers and parents at all times. If there is concern that a parent is not being positive they will be asked to leave or not to communicate with others both in and out of the studio.
